About the Farm Carbon Calculator

The Farm Carbon Calculator is an industry-leading tool which helps farmers and growers measure, understand and take action on their carbon footprint. The Calculator has been designed to be user friendly, comprehensive and intuitive - and leads the way in accounting for both emissions and carbon sequestration on farms.

We are recognised as one of the UK’s most trusted and fastest growing carbon tools. Recommended by the NFU and the Scottish Government, and for use in many projects, we help tens of thousands of users in the UK and around the world.

The Calculator began in 2009, and was created by Jonathan Smith, who brought it to Farm Carbon Toolkit in 2011. He had the foresight to understand the importance of measuring greenhouse gas emissions in agriculture and horticulture, and the technical skills and intuition to build a comprehensive and easy-to-use tool that works for farmers, and covers carbon sequestration. Ever since, the Calculator has been in continuous development and refinement, incorporating all we have learned from farmers, consultants and other professionals using our tools including our own expert advisors and researchers.

“Over 15 years ago, I co-created the Calculator in my spare time alongside being a grower. Created for the benefit of farmers and to help them become part of the climate solution, this ethos remains true today. With world class research behind it, over £500,000 spent on development, and thousands of users, I’m proud to see the impact this tool has had, and continues to have.”

– Jonathan Smith, Non-Exec. Director & Impact Manager

The Science

The Farm Carbon Calculator is backed by an independently reviewed methodology so you can trust the carbon footprints you generate. It uses the IPCC 2019 and UK GHG Inventory methodologies and is aligned with GHG protocol agricultural guidance. Our tool can also be used carefully to produce carbon footprints of farm products which exceed PAS 2050:2011 requirements and which are broadly aligned with Life Cycle Analysis guidelines defined by ISO 14044 and PAS 2050 standards. In Scotland for example this means the tool is backed for use by the Government to fulfill the Carbon Audit requirements of the Whole Farm Plan guidance. Read more

Calculator Services

For professionals and organisations looking to deploy the calculator and join us in our mission we offer usage plans for professional use, and we develop and maintain bespoke versions of the calculator that suits your purpose – be it product, system or country specific.

With our experience, we are also a major provider of carbon calculation across the wider industry and beyond by offering Calculation Engine API and building custom integrations.  We have the ability to provide trustworthy carbon footprints on any platform where farmers may already store their farm data. Our work in this field is a step-change in the industry as it means carbon footprints can now be seen and acted upon alongside systems already used to manage farms. Read more or get in touch.

Making Carbon Reporting Simple

We allow users to analyse their results through intuitive graphics, benchmarks, and downloadable reports. Our unique real-time calculation feature allows you to model the impacts of potential management changes on-farm making our calculator an invaluable decision-making tool. We believe that by understanding the carbon footprint of their businesses, farmers can confidently implement strategies to reduce emissions and enhance sustainability.
